Promotion of careers in the Merchant Navy for deck, engineering and electro-technical officers, and for support staff (ratings), on board the huge variety of commercial ships, is one of the roles of the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB). Since its inception in 1937, the MNTB has existed as the shipping industry's body for developing and promoting the training and qualification of seafarers.

Today, the MNTB is the authoritative centre of expertise and information on careers, qualifications, training opportunities, training provision and skill needs and issues in the industry.
