Support for the shipping industry's paper on emissions trading:
Comment from the CBI:
The CBI today (Wednesday 23 September 2009) commented on the discussion paper: ‘A global cap-and-trade scheme to reduce carbon emissions from international shipping’.
CBI Director for Business Environment, Dr Neil Bentley, said: “This is a constructive report. Shipping is an international industry which will require a global mechanism such as emissions trading to manage its growth in a low-carbon world. “The CBI supports the inclusion of international shipping in an emissions trading scheme because it will be crucial for both maintaining a level playing field between competitive shipping markets, and for establishing a global price for carbon. “This is why getting an international deal on moving towards a global carbon market at Copenhagen is vital.”
Peter Lockley, Head of Transport at WWF-UK said:
“It's vital that shipping is addressed in the upcoming Copenhagen climate agreement and this paper presents a detailed proposal about how this could be done.
“WWF particularly welcomes the industry's proposal that 100% of their emissions permits should be auctioned – which would put shipping streets ahead of the aviation industry in the race to be seen as a green sector."
Shipping Minister, Paul Clark MP said:
"I welcome this paper and am delighted to see that the shipping industry is taking this vital issue seriously.
“The UK Government has always maintained that international consensus is essential to tackling climate change, and we share the Chamber's view that emissions trading is the most effective solution for controlling shipping’s greenhouse gas emissions."We are investigating the possibility of the UK submitting a paper on emissions trading to the IMO, based on this industry paper. “We hope to be in a position to submit this for consideration at the next meeting of the IMO's Marine Environment Protection Committee in March."
