Shipping Industry welcomes Government's new focus on skills

29 June 2009

The focus of the Draft Legislative Programme (due to be launched today) “New Industry, New Jobs” – on improving skills, supporting low-carbon services and industries, the continued openness of the global trading system and ensuring Government action across departmental boundaries – has been welcomed by the Chamber of Shipping.

“The Government’s Draft Legislative Programme certainly suggests that we should see a more positive and joined-up approach to the needs of business generally and the shipping sector” claims Mark Brownrigg, director-general of the Chamber of Shipping.“The focus on investment in skills development must reinforce UK shipping’s argument – in the recent joint proposals from the Chamber, Nautilus UK and RMT – for investment in junior officer training.”
