Fair Treatment of Seafarers
Media Statement
1 February 2008
For the press release concerning the joint International Chamber of Shipping, International Shipping Federation and the International Transport Workers' Federation's campaign to promote the Joint ILO/IMO Guidelines on Fair Treatment of Seafarers following a Maritime Accident, please click here
The Chamber of Shipping participated in the development of the Guidelines on behalf of UK-based shipowners and ship managers.
“The production of the Guidelines sends an important signal to today’s seafarers – as well as those the industry needs to recruit for the future – that shipowners, unions, governments and international organisations believe that their rights to fair treatment and not to self-incriminate must be protected in the aftermath of a maritime accident wherever it occurs and that denial of those rights is unacceptable” said Tim Springett, Head of Labour Affairs at the Chamber of Shipping.
“The Chamber hopes that the UK Government will set out clearly how it has implemented the Guidelines and, in doing so, set an example to other States, in order to get the Guidelines accepted the world over.”
