How the Chamber is run
The Chamber's governing body is the Board. It brings together some 30 senior figures in the shipping industry who decide on the Chamber's policy across the whole range of its activities. The Board holds four meetings a year.
The Board is chaired by the President, who is elected by the members at the Annual General Meeting. The President and Vice-President are customarily chief executives or chairmen from among the shipping companies represented on the Board. The President and Director-General lead on all Chamber business and act as the principal spokesmen for the shipping industry.
Issues are considered and industry policy formulated by a network of committees and specialist panels. These bring together experts from member companies who, pooling their business knowledge and experience, review developments and analyse any proposals for change. While committees meet regularly, the panels are intended to be correspondence groups meeting on an ad hoc basis. The work and terms of reference of those committees and panels are supervised and managed by the Board, assisted by the Executive Committee. The Board and Executive Committee are also advised by a Finance Committee.
